Our Old Scholars Reunion Day was not blessed with warm sunshine , but what the weather lacked, the Old Scholars, Guests and Volunteers made up for with their laughter and good humour. There were several new faces-people who haven’t attended a Reunion before. It was a great pleasure to meet and talk to them. One such was Louise Medus-Mansell - she had been one of “my babies” I had nursed on P.E.C. during my time at Chailey as a Nursery Nurse. She has written her Autobiography- “ No hand to hold, no legs to dance on”, and it is a truly inspiring story of how a thalidomider overcame many obstacles to raise a family as well as carving out a successful career. There are many other Old Scholars who have achieved a great deal in their lives, thanks to the famous “Chailey Spirit”. After our Thanksgiving Service in St Martin’s Chapel, lovingly led by Canon Bill Peters, and the laying of the Dame Grace Kimmins Memorial Wreath by Margaret Davis, aided by Dame Grace’s Grand-daughter and our President, Mrs Verena Hanbury, we enjoyed an excellent lunch in the 16+ room, served by Volunteers. Lunch was followed by our AGM in the same room, which has a lovely balcony overlooking Chailey Common. Our Guest Speaker was the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Mr Peter Field, who was accompanied by his lovely wife Margaret. He is one of my many first cousins, and kindly accepted my invitation to our Reunion to tell us about what his present-day role entailed, and how it had evolved over past centuries. He then spent time going round and talking to individual Old Scholars, and shared tea with us before leaving for a further engagement. Thus our 2010 Reunion came to a close with numerous promises to meet again on Saturday the 14th May 2011 at the Heritage. Janet Wilkins, Chairman
