Our May Reunion Day was blessed with lovely sunshine. Old Scholars were welcomed at the door by Grahame Tindale, our Secretary, and Richard Wilkins, our Treasurer. One or two "new" Old Scholars came, including Jack Hayward, who was brought by his fellow volunteer from Swindon Steam Museum, Nancy Heath. Tea and coffee were served by wonderful volunteer ladies in the old Llangattock Room, now a Staff Lounge. The old much thumbed photo and cuttings albums were not on display, as they are getting too fragile to be handled. However, the photos have now been copied, and we were able to view them in the Main Reception Corridor. Canon Bill Peters, celebrating his 70th year of ordination, conducted our Thanksgiving Service, and he spoke movingly of his time as an Army Chaplain in the Second World War. Our dear friend and organist, Geoff Manvell, was sadly unwell and unable to play the organ, and so Clifford Dann, who normally plays at the School Carol Service, very kindly stepped into the breach and helped us sing heartily. Brian Scott read a prayer, and Stan Rothwell laid the Dame Grace Kimmins Memorial wreath with Verena Hanbury, our President. After the Service, we noted the scaffolding around the "old workhouse" building, long unused until now. It will rise like a "phoenix from the ashes", with new additions, to start a new lease of life as the "Life Skills Centre" for Chailey students aged 19 -25, who will benefit from vocational training, work experience and arts and media studies, as well as being prepared for access to opportunities and resources in the wider community. There is still much money to be raised for this exciting new venture, and I will try to keep you updated on how the project develops. After an excellent luncheon in the 16+ Dining Room, which overlooks the Common and distant Downs, served by cheerful and helpful volunteers without whom the Reunion could not take place, we welcomed Barry North of the British Polio Fellowship to speak about the Fellowship's early history and it's continuing relevance to today's people with polio. Barry's excellent talk was of great personal interest to some of our members, and it was gratifying to know that the Fellowship is at the forefront of promoting and supporting new treatment methods to make life more tolerable for those who have the condition We were able to make a gift-aided donation of £100 towards the work of the Fellowship. We enjoyed tea, cakes and a chat afterwards, before departing for another year, and still the sun shone. There will be a late summer outing to the Look and Sea Centre in Littlehampton, with luncheon at the Harbour Park Restaurant, on Saturday the 8th September 2012, commencing at 12 noon. Cost for entry to the Centre is £2 adults, £1 children.
