The day was overcast and very windy when 31 Old Scholars plus guests, helpers and drivers/carers met at the Heritage for our Annual Reunion. Coffee/tea was served in the old Llangattock Room, now the staff sitting room. The old photo albums we used to have out to browse, are now too fragile so have all been reproduced and laminated and hung in the corridor of the Main Reception area. The new Life Skills Centre, named after Dame Grace, is to be opened soon and a small number of us were able to have a guided tour by Emma Jupp, the Manager. Firstly we saw the café which will be open to all eventually, we then went into the kitchen which is big enough for several wheelchair users plus helpers. Everything works to the advantage of the least able. The technology is amazing throughout the whole complex. The Gym came next with lots of equipment there to help build up muscles and assist co-ordination of movement. You could then have a sauna in the Sauna spa room. There is an amazing IT Room with many computers and other equipment to assist students to achieve their potential. All this has been built into the old workhouse building leaving the original walls with its hand-made bricks. Also there is a lovely Art and Craft room with potter's wheel and a kiln. We then made our way into St. Martin's for our Thanksgiving Service, this year conducted by the Reverend John Maskell, Rector of Chailey village.The hymns were: (1) I heard the voice of Jesus say, (2) For all the saints who from their labours rest, (3) O God, our help in ages past, (4) God be with you 'til we meet again. Richard Clarke read a prayer and the Bible Reading was from Luke chapter 22 - The Lord's Supper. We sang the Guild Psalm and John Maskell was impressed by our singing and said he'd like us in his Sunday congregation! Clifford Dann played us out to The Master Shipwright - The Ships of Chailey Dockyard. Mrs Dorothy Humphrey then laid the Dame Grace commemorative wreath below Dame Grace's memorial tablet. Luncheon was served by lovely volunteers in the 16+ Room with it's wonderful view over the Common and the South Downs from the balcony. We are so fortunate to have volunteers who give of their time so we can enjoy a choice of tasty dishes and delicious sweets and good company too. Our AGM followed lunch. The present committee were re-elected, the chairman thanked those present for their confidence in the committee.The Treasurer asked for approval for donations to CHEC, The Friends of Chailey, and towards the cost of the 16+Ball organised by the Friends. These were approved. The date for the next year's Reunion will be Saturday, 10th May, 2014, when once again we hope to be able to meet at Chailey. Our thanks must go to the Principal, Mrs Sylvia Lamb, and all her staff for their generosity in allowing us to use the Heritage premises for our Reunion. Our Summer Outing will be to HEVER CASTLE on Saturday 31st August and we are arranging a Christmas lunch at THE FIVE BELLS, Chailey, date to be confirmed. Janet Wilkins, Chairman
