Old Scholars and families enjoyed a day out on the Bluebell Railway on Saturday the 3rd September, 2011. We met at the Bessemer Arms, the Pub/Restaurant on Platform 1, Sheffield Park Station, at 12 noon, for a delicious meal, before embarking on the train to Kingscote Station, via Horsted Keynes. After lunch, we were free to wander around the station to view the attractions including the excellent museum on Platform 2, the loco sheds and workshops, or spend money in the well-stocked shop, and buy plants and second-hand books at bargain prices. Alternatively, we could just sit and chat, reminiscing about old times, and perhaps treat ourselves to a scrummy ice cream. When it was time to board the 3pm train, there were five Old Scholars in wheelchairs, and they were able to be seated in the Railway's specially adapted carriage. It has an electrically-operated lift with a small ramp to enable passengers to board and alight as required. All the station staff were very helpful as well as cheerful, and ensured that each passenger was looked after individually. I have written to the Station Master at Sheffield Park, thanking him for the way in which he and his staff attended to our every need during a wonderful day at the Bluebell.
