My First Tomato My first salad at Chailey was on JBW… Jubilee Block Ward. We were on the top floor and below us was Boys Ward. Both wards had solariums where everybody slept outside under green Burberry’s, except in rain. It took me a while to get used to this new environment. It was my first salad, very disappointing to look at, being mostly a pile of greenery... not cabbage, not sprouts not even peas! To the side of the green pile was a small, round, red object. Now, one of my memories of round, red, edible things was the neighbour, whose house backed onto ours, dropping a bag of plums over the wall to my sister Helen and me. They were delicious, so I picked up this small, round, red object and put it in my mouth. As I bit into it, I realised that this was a very different plum. Sweet but not so sweet, and no big stone inside. When nurse came to take my plate away, I innocently asked if I could have another plum to go with the green stuff. She laughed so much that I grew quite worried that I had said something wrong. Bless her she got me another “plum” and explained they were tomatoes!
