OUTINGS...and other things One of the good things about Chailey ... and there were a lot of things that were good, apart from sports ... were the surprise outings. We never got that much advance warning and a good thing too. Some were better faced with little notice such as quiz evenings at other schools. I remember fondly one at Ardingly College, and others not so fondly. It was always good to get away from the school whether for an evening or for a weekend day out. So a trip to the funfair at Littlehampton was different, or tea at Arundel Castle. The Pavilion at Brighton was unappealing but the one I remember most was Potter’s Museum at Bramber. I remember it was a wonderful sunny day and the village seemed ‘chocolate box’ pretty and it contained Victorian Taxidermy collected and assembled by one man. Glass boxes contained kittens having a tea party and another with the “Who killed cock Robin” story with stuffed birds. I hated them but the worse one was the stick stand made from an elephant’s foot which brought tears to my eyes and I had to walk out into the sunshine and let go of my anger. I never wanted to see anything like it again.
